"Olá!

I’m Ilaria, a 25-year-old Italian ESC volunteer currently living in Porto.

Last month at the refugee centre in Porto has been an incredible and deeply moving experience. The centre is a place of constant movement, new faces arriving, others leaving, but in the midst of this change, there is a strong sense of community.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the last month has been working with the children. Their joy, curiosity, and boundless energy bring light to every moment. Despite the challenges they have faced, they are eager to learn, connect, and participate in everything we do. Their enthusiasm is contagious, making every activity feel even more meaningful.

Throughout the month, we organized various activities for the beneficiaries, with a special focus on international days such as O Dia de Afetos. These moments allowed us to foster a spirit of togetherness and celebration, offering both children and adults a chance to engage in something positive and uplifting. Additionally, as Ramadan approaches, we made an effort to raise awareness about its significance, encouraging cultural understanding and respect within the centre.

One of the most challenging parts of this experience has been seeing people leave. Over time, we form strong bonds, and saying goodbye is never easy. However, it is also a hopeful moment, it means that their journey is continuing, and they are taking the next step towards rebuilding their lives. Of course, the experience has also been demanding both physically and emotionally. The fast-paced environment, the need to be constantly present and engaged, and the weight of the stories shared with us can be exhausting. However, the connections made, the smiles exchanged, and the impact of small acts of kindness make every challenge worthwhile.

This month has been a journey of learning, growth, and deep appreciation for the strength of the human spirit and I am happy that I am making unforgettable."
