How to become a volunteer in France? (for French people or French residents!)

Dernière mise à jour : 6 mai 2022

In France, several schemes allow young people to volunteer and get involved in projects at national or international level in many different fields. Here, we will talk about the main ones:

Service Civique :

Service Civique is a voluntary commitment in the service of the general interest, open to all young people aged 16 to 25, without qualification requirements, extended up to 30 years for young people with disabilities.

It is carried out over a period of 6 to 12 months in France or abroad and represents an hourly rate of at least 24 hours per week.

It can be carried out in 9 major areas: culture and leisure, international development and humanitarian action, education for all, environment, emergency intervention in the event of a crisis, memory and citizenship, health, solidarity, sport.

Volontariat de Solidarité Internationale (VSI):

The Volontariat de Solidarité Internationale (VSI) is a device framed by french law. Its purpose is "the accomplishment of a mission of general interest abroad in the fields of development, cooperation and humanitarian action". The contract is the same as a civic service performed abroad (Service Civique à l'International). The VSI mutually engages a sending organization and a volunteer. This program has no age limit, so it's not just for young people, but the majority of volunteers (around 60%) are found to be under 30 years old.

Associative Volunteering:

Associative volunteering is a program that allows you to participate in missions of general interest in various fields: educational, environmental, humanitarian, sports, etc. The missions are organized in France or abroad. This device is intended for anyone aged 16 or over, subject to meeting certain conditions. The missions performed are compensated and the rights to social benefits are preserved. The missions can be carried out with an association or foundation recognized as a public utility approved by the State or with a public establishment.

Volontariat International en Entreprise (V.I.E):

The Volontariat International en Entreprise allows the volunteer to carry out a

commercial, technical or scientific mission within a French company abroad, for 6 to 24 months. It is intended mainly for students, young graduates, or job seekers, from 18 to 28 years old. With this volunteering, you are under the protection of the French Embassy and supervised by Business France throughout your mission. You can find your mission by yourself, by canvassing companies or by consulting the offers on the site which brings together all the offers of V.I.E: https://mon-vie-via.businessfrance.fr/

Volontariat International en Administration (V.I.A):

The Volontariat en Administration allows you to go and work

abroad for services of the French State (embassy, institutes, French alliances, etc.), it lasts between 6 to 24 months, and is aimed at young people aged 18 to 28 years old wishing to participate in France's action in the world in terms of cultural action, environmental protection, technical, scientific and economic development, and humanitarian action. Like the V.I.E, you are under the protection of the French Embassy and supervised by Business France. You can find all the offers on the website: https://mon-vie-via.businessfrance.fr/

International Volunteering of La Francophonie:

This program set up by the Organisation International de La Francophonie (OIF)

offers young Francophones, aged 21 to 34 and holding a university degree, to put their skills into practice for development projects in french speaking countries. These volunteer missions are carried out within French-speaking institutions wishing to benefit from the support of a volunteer for their projects. This program allows them to promote solidarity, develop dialogue between cultures, support the employability of young people and facilitate their social and professional integration.

United Nations Volunteering (UNV):

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program is administered by the United Nations

Development Program UNDP. The UNVs are volunteers responsible for missions between 6 to 12 months, supporting the United Nations in various fields of activity: humanitarian actions, sustainable development, peacekeeping operations. They can come from various fields of expertise: agriculture, health, education, social sciences, industry, infrastructure, etc. The activities of UNV volunteers revolve around three strands of significant contributions:

- expand access and improve the distribution of services;

- allow the integration and participation of marginalized people;

- mobilize communities through voluntary action.
