Training Course

 5-7 December – Roma - Italy

ACTIV in sport: First training course complete and extremely successful!

Participants gathered in Italy to train and hone in skills to promote and include new volunteers ins sport and foster inclusion.

On December 5tht, 2019, 21 participants of ACTIV came from Portugal, Italy and Spain to complete this training course. This training course took part in Roma in the peripheral neighborhood close to Ciampino. The mission of the training course was to share with ACTIV in Sport participants good practices and methods on how to create activities that promote volunteering and increased participation amongst young people in sports. The training course consisted of multiple presentations of experts and good practices, activities to integrate a new methodology, and reflection to implement the best tactics to create a positive experience for their volunteers at local level.

START TO FINISH… What was accomplished?

The start of the training course began with an introduction of all its participants to grow more familiar with each other. Then a plenary interactive presentation started in order to introduce the good practices collected by the partners. In some cases, the expert and the organization that are implementing those good practices where present to talk and to interact with the participants in order to reply to their questions and create connection for suture cooperation. In particular, following the presentation of SOJOVEM, Italian Red Cross and ASKT, some experts were invited as representative of Special Olympics Italia, of Scout of Rome and of ACLI Italia – sport department. At the plenary were also invited a group of young people coming from different youth organization from EU context participating in a project about youth participation, in order to create a deeper exchange among ACTIV in sport Participants and those youth organization in order for them to get more inputs from young people how they deal with volunteers in their own countries and have a wider perspective to create the pilot activities once the TC is finished.

After the plenary, once familiar, participants split between two groups to begin the training course. The first group listened to a presentation from representative of the organization SOJOVEM, while the second group engaged in some methodology for inclusion used by ASKT. Once each group completed the given task, they switched roles to make sure everyone received the same experience and information.

After completing the first two activities, participants started the reflection process back in their national group. Participants were given the opportunity to analyze both the presentation and training activity they were hoisted into. For example, participants had to reflect on what happened and how they could use and adapt the given situation in their reality. Once their reflection period was over, the participants presented their ideas and choose among the two mentors (SOJOVEM and ASKT) to received professional feedback on the correct procedures to implement their activities at local level and to start the monitoring system with them.

The next day, participants created a clear structure of their own activities based on what they wanted to implement. Once they came up with activities, they were given the chance to share these activities with each other and receive feedback. This feedback allowed participants to brainstorm different variations of their activities, as well as alternative approaches to the activity. The multiple variations and approaches taught participants how to adapt on the fly when they introduce their activity. A clear monitoring system was created, different for each mentor, in order to check the implementation of the

PARTICIPANTS FINAL TAKE-AWAY AND TEST

After undergoing multiple days of training, participants got the chance to put their newfound skills, thoughts, and activities to test. Participants were brought to football field and were introduced to a local team. Participants proceeded to introduce the activities they worked on the day before to the athletes and made a football match.

Once this process was complete, participants took part in a final reflection of their activities and the whole training course. Participants were encouraged to reflect back on their experience, on what worked, what did not, and how they will go about changing and eventually implementing their activity. If their activity proves successful in the next few months, it will eventually become part of the toolkit to be used for years to come.

The Italian and Spanish delegation arrived in Porto on 18th in the evening and after a nice joint dinner and a session of interviews for the toolkit, on the 19th they started to analyse the outcomes of the pilot activities in order to create the final toolkit.

Following the decision taken by the coordinators of the project, only the participants that where really active after the training course could concretely participate in the last activities of the project.

At this point, the representative of Red Cross Lazio presented the work she did for the final event.

Due to the pandemic, the international event of Italian Red Cross in Solferino was canceled both in its 2020 and 2021 edition: for this reason they decided to involve one of their partner, OPES Italia, that had instead the chance to organize a big national sport event in Roma. The event was set as the occasion where to realize the final event of ACTIV and present the final toolkit to a wider public in the sport movement.

On this basis, the final event of ACTIV in Sport will be realized on 26th and 27th of June 2021 in Roma, at the Roma Sport Experience event venue, located at Parco Cinecittà World.
